Polish History

POLISH HISTORY

Poland's Civilization dates back to around 2000 B.C however it wasn't until 966 that Great (north) Poland was united by Piast Mieszko I. Mieszko was a Christian and his people followed his beliefs. In 1047 Great Poland and Little Poland (made up of the southern tribes of Poland) were united under the rule of Casimir I The Restorer.

In 1386 Poland merged with Lithuania by royal marriage and formed a large powerful commonwealth with elected kings. Between the 14th and 16th centuries the Polish-Lithuanian state reached the peak of its power scoring military successes against the (Germanic) Knights of the Teutonic Order, the Russians, and the Ottoman Turks.

By the late 1700's however Poland had been weakened by a series of wars with its neighbours. In 1795 it was conquered and divided up among Russia, Prussia (now Germany) and Austria. Poland ceases to exist as a country for 123 years.

In 1918, after World War 1, Poland was restored as a country. But just 21 years later German and the Soviet Union attacked, intent on dividing Poland between them. The beginning marked the beginning of World War 2 and led to nearly 45 years of Soviet occupation.

In 1980, Polish workers began protesting against communist rule under the now-famous union banner of solidarity. In 1989, after nearly a decade of clashes between the government and solidarity activists, democratic elections were held. The country was renamed The Republic of Poland and in 1990 the Polish communist party was dissolved.
